Wednesday, April 6th, Daniel Fernandes, who plays for the Lisboa Navigators, was the first athlete to be involved in an international transfer trade between a Portuguese club and a foreign club under the new rules of IFAF Europe.
Fernandes now plays defense for the Göteborg Marvels who play in Sweden’s Superettan series, one step below the Super series. The Associação Portuguesa de Futebol Americano released the following statement.
Historic day for Football in Portugal, Daniel Fernandes who represented the Lisbon Navigators, is officially the first international transfer (under the new rules of the IFAF) from a Portuguese player to a club abroad.
The first transaction involving a Portuguese player signing with another European team involved João Fonseca, also of the Navigators, who signed to play for the L’Hospitalet Pioners of Spain. However, the deal was not valid under the rules of IFAF Europe.
The Marvels open their 2015 season on May 9 when they take on the Gefle Red Devils.
Portuguese Championship
Currently, the regular season of Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Americano (LPFA) is finished. Navigators will compete in the playoffs against Porto Renegades. The winner faces the winner between Lisboa Devils and Braga Warriors.
