Delaware Valley University linebacker/safety Danny Wynne leaving Sweden for Germany’s Allgäu Comets
The Allgäu Comets in the German Football League have snagged one of the top safeties and returners in Sweden in 2017, Danny Wynne.
The 23 year old 6’1″, 215 lb native of Hatfield, Pennsylvania, played for the Örebro Black Knights in 2017, helping the team to the Swedish championship final, after spending the 2016 season with Rome’s Lazio Marines.
He graduated from Delaware Valley University where his play over three years attracted NFL interest. As team captain, he amassed 327 tackles during his college career which had the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers interested. He was a four-year starter and three-time first team all conerence player. Heading into his junior season he was a second team All American.
With the Comets, Wynne is reunited with his former Lazio head coach Stan Bedwell who is pleased:
“Danny is a true football player. The kind of guy that would get picked first on the playground because he can do it all. He began his Euro career playing for me in Rome in 2016, so this is a reunion of sorts. I know what I’m getting with Danny…a very intelligent player, great attitude, and a winner. When he told me he was interested, I didn’t even have to think about it. The entire process of speaking with him to signing him happened in one day. I can’t wait to get him here with us in Kempten…he will make us a lot better.”
American Football International asked Wynne about the move and playing football in Europe.
American Football International: You had an outstanding season in Sweden in 2017 reaching the Swedish final. Why the move to Germany and the Allgau Comets?
Danny Wynne: The move to Germany was a tough decision, I was set on going back to Örebro for this upcoming season…What sold me on Germany was, the opportunity to play against the best athletes in Europe. I’ve also played for Coach Bedwell in Italy last year….I think he’s a great coach and I believe we have a big season ahead of us.
AFI: You have now played in Italy and Sweden. What were the differences?
Wynne: From my own personal experience, I’d say that Sweden was more organized as a league then Italy was. Sweden was also better competition in my opinion. Nonetheless they both were great experiences and I absolutely enjoyed all of the historical sites that I have been able to see.
AFI: You have had a chance to travel in Europe. What countries or cities have you enjoyed?
Wynne: Both cities that I’ve lived in since I have been here have been my favorite. Going from living in Rome to living in Örebro, it enabled me to live two different lifestyles that I thoroughly enjoyed. Rome was clearly way bigger and always more going on in the city, a lot more tourist and events going on. While Örebro was more laid back of a city, less populated, and had some great nature sites outside of the city.
AFI: Have you found a favorite meal?
Wynne: Kebab Rulle!
AFI: What do you think you bring to the Comets?
Wynne: I bring leadership, hard work and dedication. I am ready to come in with the comets and make an immediate positive impact.
AFI: What are your expectations for 2018?
Wynne: Win the GFL championship.
AFI: How much longer do you think you will play overseas?
Wynne: Unless I am given the opportunity to play at the next level, I’ll be playing overseas until I lose my passion and love for the game.
AFI: How did you find out about playing in Europe?
Wynne: I found out about it from a former college teammate after my shot at the NFL/CFL didn’t go my way.
