The Ancona Dolphins who finished fifth in Italy’s Division I in 2018, have signed Nelson Hughes III (North Greenville University, NCAA Div. II) as their quarterback for the 2019 season.
Hughes, 6′, 185 lbs, a native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, was the seventh leading passer in the German Football League in 2018 playing for the Ingolstadt Dukes. He threw for 2,947 yards and 30 touchdowns in averaged 210 yards a game. He also rushed for 352 yards and another three touchdowns. He first arrived in Europe partway through the 2017 GFL season, playing for the Hildesheim Invaders. In the final eight games of the season, he threw for 1,278 yards and nine touchdowns.
During his four year college career playing for the North Greenville Crusaders, he broke every school record throwing for a total of 9,894 yards while rushing for 486 yards, accounting for 84 touchdowns in total.
Ancona opens their 2019 season on the weekend of March 9/10 when they face the Parma Panthers.
