IFAF: Honduras and Guatemala open Central Americas Championships with wins

Host nation Honduras opened the 2025 IFAF Central America Championships with a 14-8 win over Nicaragua at the Estadio Olímpico José Simón Azcona in Tegucigalpa.

As the group stages got underway, Guatemala shut out El Salvador 14-0 earlier on Thursday.

The two unbeaten teams meet this Sunday, April 6, at the same venue in the nation’s capital at 5pm looking to top the table heading into the concluding group games, which will be played in El Salvador in July. Nicaragua and El Salvador do battle at 2pm on Sunday. Both games will be shown live on IFAF.TVhttps://ifaf.tv/sportitemset/67ec07814a86ee595bf622b9

Honduras scored on the game’s opening drive as quarterback Luque lofted a pass beyond the Nicaragua secondary to find Marconi in the back of end zone for 30-yard touchdown. Luque also completed an initial two-point conversion pass, but the score was called back for an infringement and the subsequent attempt failed, keeping the score at 6-0.

Despite establishing a promising running attack, Nicaragua was forced to punt away its first possession and Anguila broke two tackles before returning the ball 65 yards down the right sideline for a second Honduras touchdown. The two-point conversion was successful as Hammer went in on the ground to extend the hosts’ lead to 14 points.

Nicaragua looked to be on the ropes when Calix sacked quarterback Morales to force a long third down play, but Morales then threw a deep pass to Zeikil at the 33-yard line to set up a scoring opportunity. Having moved the ball down to the three-yard mark, running back Padilla burst over the goal line to score. A Morales to tight end Espinoza two-point pass reduced the deficit to 14-8 before halftime, but neither team could breach the end zone again during the second half.
