Hungary: Unbeaten season at stake in Capital City Derby
The Hungarian Football League continues with three games this weekend. The Miskolc Steelers are aiming for their first win at home against the Fehérvár Enthroners, while the Kyiv Capitals tries to make it 2-2 against the Győr Sharks away. However, this weekend’s top match is the Capital City derby between the Budapest Cowbells and Budapest Wolves.
Miskolc Steelers (0-3) – Fehérvár Enthroners (2-1), May 18
The only game on Saturday will be between these two teams in Felsőzsolca. The Steelers could not earn their first win last week against the Capitals. It was also Morris Carson’s first game as the new quarterback for Miskolc. He now had an additional week to get used to the new system which is not too much time. However, the Steelers’ situation is still not easy since Jeremy Dixon, and Máté Jónás are injured and Eaton Demetrius Lamar is not fully healthy.
The Enthroners suffered their first loss of the year to the Budapest Wolves. Nevertheless, life goes on and there are two more games to go. In addition, Fehérvár still has the chance to finish first or second in the regular season. The offense is in good shape, but the defense is missing key players with Max Nedzelsky, Attila Poór and Mike Wallace all out due to injury.
Budapest Cowbells (3-0) – Budapest Wolves (3-0), May 19
The Budapest Cowbells are in an outstanding form after the last season which was filled with ups and downs. After the 2017 championship the defense is solid again but it has to perform its best on Sunday. Although the offense sometimes struggled against the Győr Sharks last time, it has always had a solid game against the Wolves in the past few years. With quarterback Tamás Váry in good shape, the Cowbells might even win this game which can decide the top spot in the regular season.
This might be the hardest game for the reigning champion so far. The Wolves got an important win against the Enthroners one week ago, nonetheless, the offense struggled in some periods of the match. Running back Dávid Danku’s performance needs to be highlighted since he made three touchdowns against Fehérvár. After returning from a long injury, he might be the key player of the Wolves on Sunday as well.
Győr Sharks (0-3) – Kyiv Capitals (1-2), May 19
Dustin Hawke Willingham might be the solution for the Sharks to turn this season around. Last time, the head coach joined the team on the field as the new quarterback. Although he had to debut in a rainy game, he made accurate throws to the receivers. The Sharks’ plays seemed better with him as the new signal-caller. Now, he has had two weeks to prepare for the next challenge…
…which will be the Kyiv Capitals. The Ukrainian squad got its first win last time that had a good impact on the team. The return of quarterback Maksym Cherepivskyi and the addition of receiver Troy Rice helped the Capitals a lot. The offense seems reborn and hard to stop, and now capable of making big plays.
