Host Honduras tops Central America Championships standings
Honduras remains on top of the IFAF Central America Championships after the first four games of the tournament’s group stages, boasting the only unbeaten record among the four nations.
The hosts of the first phase of games followed up a 14-8 win over Nicaragua by narrowly beating Guatemala 8-6 at the Estadio Olímpico José Simón Azcona in Tegucigalpa.
Nicaragua bounced back from that opening game loss to blank El Salvador 38-0 and now sits in second place in the standings ahead of Guatemala, with both nations posting a 1-1 record.
El Salvador still seeks is first win and will host the remaining group games and the Championship and Third Place games when the competition resumes in July.
Honduras 8 Guatemala 6
Running back Percy Manuel Daron Rublo carried the load on the game’s opening possession and took the ball down to the three-yard mark where on second and goal he breached the end zone to open an early Honduras lead. Quarterback Les Marko Solis Sumiento found tight end Manuel Alejendro Estrace Lopez for the two-point attempt to put the hosts 8-0 in front.
Guatemala hit back in the second quarter when on fourth down, quarterback Molineros lofted a perfect pass to Macilla who had raced beyond the Honduras secondary to reel in a 23-yard touchdown pass. Diego Alberto Solórzano Escober came up with a crucial sack as Molineros dropped back to attempt a two-point pass, keeping the hosts in front by two points with the score 8-6. Both defenses were on top during the second half as Honduras held on to claim victory.

El Salvador 0 Nicaragua 38
Wide receiver Zeikil Elías Pérez Martínez scored two touchdowns for Nicaragua, his first coming from a first quarter pass from pass from quarterback Jorge Alberto Morales Rocha to earn a 16-0 lead. Pablo Vicente Padilla had opened the scoring with a touchdown run and tagged on a two-point conversion rush.
Joel Alexander Vega Fonseca recovered a fumble to get ball back and shut out any hope El Salvador had of an immediate reply.
Pérez Martínez scored his second touchdown untouched on a well-executed reverse as Morales Rocha pitched the ball to Lenin Giovanny Garcia, who handed off to Pérez Martínez, and his dash to the end zone established a 22-point halftime advantage.
In the fourth quarter, Padilla reeled off a bruising rush as he dragged tacklers down to the five-yard mark and from there Santiago Ernesto Reyes Martinez rushed for a touchdown. Morales Rocha’s initial two-point pass was intercepted in the end zone by Heber Ramirez, but Caleb Abdul Gómez Sequeira stripped the ball from his grasp and lineman Felix Alberto Jáenz Gómez caught the loose ball to increase the Nicaraguan lead to 30-0.
Nicaragua made two significant gains on the ground to move the ball to within inches of the end zone and from there Alberto Carlos Gallo Martínez powered over to score. Tight end Maynor Josue Espinoza Delgado completed the 38-point win with a two-point catch from Morales Rocha.
