The Győr Sharks moved on to the post season in the Hungarian Football League with a sound thrashing of the Budapest Cowbells, beating them 41-14 and eliminating them from further play.
The visiting Sharks took charge early as running back Kende Ráthonyi punched the ball in to make it 7-0.
With the Cowbells offense stalled, Győr scored again on a László Benedek touchdown reception making it a two possession advantage. Sharks defensive back Dániel Sere picked off an errant Cowbells pass reaching the red zone before being hauled down. Not much later, quarterback Chris Jeffrey increased the lead to 21-0, scoring his first touchdown in the HFL. Things kept getting worse for the home team as Sharks wide receivers Péter Keller and László Benedek each added a touchdown giving Győr a 35-0 lead. From that moment on, the mercy rule came into effect, which meant the Cowbells had a very slim chance to turn the game around.
In the second half, the Cowbells offense started to emerge, and rookie quarterback Marcell Kelemen threw his first touchdown-pass to rookie wide receiver Márk Dániel who also added the two-point conversion (8-35). Although the Sharks had an answer with Andres Fernandez’s TD-grab, the Cowbells scored one more time with Sere’s second catch (14-41).
This result meant that the Győr Sharks advanced to the second round of the regular season, while the Cowbells’ season came to an end.
