Finland: Helsinki Roosters sign lockdown CB Denzel Washington

The Helsinki Roosters of Finland’s Maple League have bolstered their defense with the signing of defensive back Denzel Washington, a former standout at Arkansas Tech University.

The 6-1, 210 pound, 26 year old Washington, from Monroe, Louisiana, brings a wealth of experience from leagues across North America and Mexico, making him a valuable addition to the Roosters’ secondary.

After finishing at Arkansas Tech in 2021, Washington began his professional career with the XFL’s Houston Roughnecks, where his agility and coverage skills earned attention despite the league’s abbreviated season. He then transitioned to the CFL, spending time with the Edmonton Elks in 2023, refining his technique in Canada’s unique football environment.

In 2022, Washington joined Mexico’s Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional (LFA), signing with the Reyes de Jalisco. There, he emerged as a lockdown cornerback, tallying three interceptions and 11 pass breakups in his debut season. His adaptability in diverse leagues—from the XFL’s fast-paced style to the LFA’s emphasis on tactical play—showcases his versatility.

Roosters’ Title Pursuit

The Helsinki Roosters, fresh off their 2024 Maple League championship, view Washington as a defensive cornerstone. General Manager Pekka Virtanen emphasized his “global experience and leadership,” critical for sustaining dominance in Finland’s competitive league
