GFL: Munich Cowboys re-sign RB Brandon Watkins
The Munich Cowboys of the German Football League are bringing back their leading rusher from 2021 in running back Brandon Watkins.
Watkins was one of the keys to the Cowboys making the postseason, finishing the season as one of the top ball carriers in the GFL South.
Watkins is excited to be a part of the Cowboys rebuild:
“There is something special being built in Munich after all of this past year’s changes and the hiring of Nadine as the head coach. I want to continue to be a part of the culture being built. I also have unfinished business with football after coming out of retirement this year to play. This year was only a sneak peek of what the Cowboys and I are capable of.”
The 5’10”, 200-pound tailback ran for 663 yards and eight touchdowns in 10 games in Munich this past season. Watkins also added 86 receiving yards and 361 yards and a touchdown as a kick returner, finishing the season with 1,110 all-purpose yards and nine scores. Last season was hardly the 28-year old’s first go-round in Germany as Wakins played three seasons from 2017-2019 as quarterback for the Munich Rangers, putting up 139 total touchdowns in three seasons. Prior to moving to Munich, Watkins played for the Landsberg X-press in Bavaria along with the Cuiaba Arsenal in Brazil.
The Detroit, Michigan native played quarterback, running back, and receiver in high school. The versatile prospect went on to play collegiate football at Notre Dame College (Ohio NCAA D2) before switching sports and competing in college Rugby. Following his NCAA rugby career, Watkins had several Arena Football League tryouts before beginning his international career as a quarterback in southern Germany.
Munich’s head coach Nadine Nurasyid looks so to rebuild her team for the upcoming season in the competitive GFL South. Nurasyid has recently appointed former quarterback Justin Sottilare as the team’s offensive coordinator along with re-signing Watkins. Expect Sottilare to work in the hard-running Watkins as the Cowboys aim to make another run at the postseason.
