The Stuttgart Scorpions have promoted from within so to speak as they have signed 31 year old Jermaine Guynn as their new head coach, replacing Fabian Birkholz.
Guynn served as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach in 2016 and 2017 after finishing the season playing defensive line and running back for Austria’s Swarco Raiders.
The 6’1″, 250 lb native of Indianapolis, Indiana and former Purdue Boilermaker (2005-2008) returns to Stuttgart where he played in 2014 and 2015. He is entering his seventh season in Europe but first as a head coach. He started his European playing career with the Tyreso Royal Crowns in Sweden in 2012 before moving to the Saarland Hurricanes in Germany for the 2013 season.
While playing for the Scorpions he amassed 123 tackles and 12 sacks while also rushing for 356 yards and eight touchdowns.
The Scorpions finished the 2017 season with a 4-10 record after finishing 7-7 in 2016. The team has not made the playoffs since 2015. Despite the dismal record in 2017, the team had the sixth best defense in Germany allowing 324 yards a game.
