Sonny Weishaupt has returned to his roots in the German Football League as the new “old” quarterback for the Marburg Mercenaries.
Weishaupt broke into the German top league in 2012 with Marburg and also played for the Mercenaries during the 2013 season.
The 6’4″, 210 lb, 27 year old native of Babenhausen, Germany spent the 2019 season first leading the Grenoble Centaures to the French wild card playoffs and then helping the Braunschweig New Yorker Lions win the German title. In Grenoble, Weishaupt wound up as the third leading passer in France having thrown for 2,141 yards and 21 touchdowns. In the midst of the French season, Weishaupt was the only European quarterback selected to participate in the CFL Combine in Toronto, Canada in mid March.
Weishaupt spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons with the Frankfurt Universe throwing for a total of 2,450 yards and 33 touchdowns over the course of the two seasons. The Universe reached the German Bowl in 2018 and the GFL semifinals in 2017. In 2015 and 2016 Weishaupt was behind center for the Rhein-Neckar Bandits in the GFL throwing for 2,498 yards and 11 touchdowns. He first played in the GFL with the Mercenaries in 2012 and 2013 before moving to the Darmstadt Diamonds in GFL2 for the 2014 season, throwing for 1,643 yards and 13 touchdowns in 14 games.
He attended Waldorf University (NAIA) on a full scholarship.
Needless to say, Weishaupt is thrilled to be returning to Marburg:
“A lot has happened in my career since 2012, but now is the time to take the next step together with a great coach and a real homegrown squad as a team. I’m really looking forward to gaining a foothold in Marburg.”
