Germany’s Ingolstadt Dukes sign LB Cory Magwood
The Ingolstadt Dukes have wasted no time since the end of the 2017 German Football League season in preparing for 2018, and have signed linebacker Cory Magwood.
The Dukes reached the GFL playoffs in their first year in the league in 2017 but were bounced in the quarterfinals by the Braunschweig New Yorker Lions. They have taken the first steps in improving their defense, which was already fifth best in Germany with the signing of Cory Magwood.
The 6’3″, 233 lb Magwood, a Varnville, South Carolina native, spent the 2017 season with Finland’s Seinäjoki Crocodiles where he averaged almost six tackles a game.
He enjoyed an excellent four year career at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina where he was a ALL Southern Conference Selection in both 2014 and 2015. He was also an FCS All-American in 2015 and Southern Conference Player of the Year. He was invited to Pittsburgh Steelers rookie mini-camp in 2016.
In his senior year, Magwood led the Southern Conference in tackles (118) and was sixth in FCS with 11.8 tackles per game. He has a reputation of not just making tackles, but making plays:
“Having that mindset that I have to find the football, and it’s beating guys over there. It’s competing against not only the other guys, but against my teammates to make plays. It makes the game that much more enjoyable for me.”
Magwood doesn’t base his performance solely on the number of tackles, though that’s an easy gauge for a linebacker.
“Whether I’ve played within the scheme and read my keys and the opportunities that I’ve had to make plays, then I feel like I’ve done my job. Also, I base my success on how many points the other team scores. A lot of the games that we played this season, I feel like I could have done a lot better to stop that.”
