Germany’s Allgäu Comets sign All American QB Tyler Johnson
The Allgäu Comets of the German Football League, have added to their offensive firepower with the signing of quarterback Tyler Johnson from Alfred University (NCAA Div. III).
The 6’2″, 215 lb, 23 year old native of East Syracuse, New York, was a four year starter and two-time All American at Alfred University where he finished his career with a school record 11,509 yards in total offense. He threw for 8,329 yards while rushing for 3,120 yards and scoring 115 touchdowns, also a school record. In fact, he set a total of 14 school records including most passing yards in a game, 534, most single season touchdowns, 50, most rushing touchdowns in a season, 21, most total offense in a season with 4,025 and most games won, 32.
In his senior year, after leading his team to a 12-1 record while racking up 4,025 yards and 50 touchdowns, he was named the Empire 8 Conference MVP Player of The Year as well as First Team All Conference and named to the All East Regional First Team.
Allgäu head coach Stan Bedwell:
“Our offense is dependent on a quarterback who is able to throw and run the football. Tyler definitely fits that mold He is a proven winner with a phenomenal resume and his experience coaching defensive line at the collegiate level is a testament to his understanding of the game.We are very happy to have him on board and we have very high expectations for the offense under Tyler’s leadership.”
The Comets finished the 2017 season out of the German Football League playoffs for the first time in three years with a 6-8 record.
Johnson’s head coach at Alfred was equally impressed with his abilities:
“Every year he’s improved as a quarterback. He not just doing it with his legs. He’s reading defenses, getting us into the right plays and making the right reads. He is very serious about the game of football, definitely a student of the game. He watches a ton of film. He knows what’s going on. It’s like having another coach out there. He’s very aware of his surroundings when he’s on a football field.”
Allgäu has previously signed Marshall University’s record-breaking receiver Tommy Shuler. along with Swedish speedster Jonatan Gihl as well as safety/kick returner Danny Wynne.
