Germany: Key matchups looming as GFL heads into home stretch
The German Football League has passed the midpoint of the 2024 season and now, with playoff berths on the line, the games take on even more significance.
Ten of the GFL’s are in action. Let’s take a look at the matchups.
The Potsdaam Royals (7-0) take their unbeaten record to Kempten in an interconference contest to take on the struggling Allgäu Comets (2-4) is a game whose outcome could well be a foregone conclusion unfortunately. The Royals are definitely on a roll and took down the top team in the GFL South, the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, comfortably, two weeks ago. The slumping Comets have lost three in a row. In other action, the Hildesheim Invaders (6-1) will host a Berlin Adler (4-3) team badly in need of a win to stay in playoff contention. These two teams met earlier in the season with the Invaders coming out on top 49-42. The Dresden Monarchs (4-1) head to Kiel to face the Hurricanes (2-5) for the second time this year. Dresden took the first game at home 22-11 but Kiel can be dangerous. This could be an interesting game.
The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (7-1) who sit first in the GFL South will host the last place Kirchdorf Wildcats (1-6). In the first game between these two, the Unicorns won handily, 36-10. Finally, in the late game, the second place Straubing Spiders (3-3) will travel to Ravensburg to play the Ravensburg Razorbacks (3-5) in maybe the most intriguing matchup of the weekend. Straubing won the first encounter earlier this season, beating the Razorbacks 14-3, but Ravensburg has been playing well since then and have won three of their last five and were very close to winning all five.
