Germany: Berlin Rebels re-sign Dutch RB Chris Smith
The Berlin Rebels’ powerful ground game has been further reinforced again in 2019 with the re-signing of running back Chris Smith from Holland.
The 6’1″, 205 lb Smith rushed for 417 yards on 90 carries in 11 games for Berlin in 2018, sharing the running back duties with fellow Dutchman, Sean Richard. He spent the previous two years with the league champion Braunschweig New Yorker Lions and enjoyed a breakout year in 2016 rushing for 1,459 yards and 13 touchdowns placing fifth in rushing in the German Football League. Smith, a Dutch native signed with the Lions in 2015 after a successful career with the Alphen Eagles in Holland.
The Rebels had the second leading rushing offense in 2018 with 2,334 yards and 27 rushing touchdowns. With both Smith and recently-signed Andreas Betza in the backfield, it doesn’t look like Rebels head coach Kim Kuci has any plans to go away from his powerful ground game.
The 27 year old Smith began his American Football career aged 13 with the Hague Raiders. In 2011 he signed with the Alphen Eagles, helping them win three national championships before leaving for Germany.
