Germany: Allgäu Comets dominate Straubing Spiders for 4th straight win
Out of all of the results of last weekend’s contests in the German Football League, the biggest surprise was the Allgäu Comets (5-3) domination of the Straubing Spiders (6-2) by a score of 43-7.
With the win, the Comets now sit solidly in fourth place in the South Division ahead of the Saarland Hurricanes who are fifth with a 3-5 record. The loss dropped Straubing down to third place behind the Munich Cowboys.
With running back Lamar Carswell being so important to the Spiders offense, his lack of touches on this day was apparent as the offense struggled against a tough Comets front seven.
Allgäu jumped out into a 12-7 lead in the first quarter. Comets quarterback Kenyatte Allen scored on a five yard run and then connected with receiver Derrick Harvey for a 49 yard score. In between, Straubing wideout Kyle Barnett hauled in a 21 yard touchdown pass from Raleigh Yeldell to account for the Spiders only score.
The Comets began pulling away in the second quarter, adding two more scores as Allen found Pascall Ruegg from 15 yards out to extend the lead to 18-7 and then hit running back Tomiwa Oyewo for a 21 yard scoring strike giving the home team a 24-7 lead going into the break.
Comets‘ defensive back Devan Burrell basically put the game out of reach for the struggling Spiders returning the opening kickoff of the second half 99 yards for a touchdown to boost the lead to 30-7. With seven minutes left in the third period, Yeldell was picked off by Burrell for the second time that day, and Allen and co. took over at the Spiders’ 26 yard line. Four plays later, Allen hit Ruegg for a 16 yard touchdown and the lead was 37-7.
Allgäu added a final touchdown late in the fourth period when Allen connected with Harvey for a 41 yard score after Burrell picked of Yeldell for the Comets‘ third interception of the night.
Comets quarterback Kenyatte Allen had an impressive day throwing 366 yards and five touchdowns on 28 of 39 passing. Harvey finished with four catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns while Ruegg had nine receptions for 91 yards and two scores as well. Oyewo chipped in with six catches for 82 yards and another touchdown.
When it came to the defense for the Comets, two of their biggest game changers were linebackers Niall Padden and Dominik Schmid. Schmid finished with 12 tackles while Padden recorded nine.
Yeldell wound up with 98 yards passing and one touchdown while rushing for a total of 77 yards. Carswell was held to 54 yards rushing on eight carries while Barnett had seven receptions for 56 yards and the sole touchdown.
This week, both teams face much stronger competition as the Comets will be hosting GFL juggernaut the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. Meanwhile, the Spiders will stay home while they welcome second place team, Munich Cowboys.
