The German Football League heads into Week #5 of the 2024 season with some intriguing matchups in store.
The Dresden Monarchs have opened the season with two straight wins beating both the Paderborn Dolphins and Braunschweig New Yorker Lions. They will face Kiel who also downed the Lions but lost to Paderborn and the defending champion Potsdam Royals. Dresden needs the win to keep pace with Potsdam while the Hurricanes need to avoid the basement of the GFL North.
In other action in the North, a battle for Berlin is scheduled with the Adler hosting the Rebels. The Rebels had to come from behind to beat the Saarland Hurricanes, staging a last second goal line stand to secure the win. They lost to the Hildesheim Invaders but then defeated the Kirchdorf Wildcats. The Adler opened the season with two straight losses to the Hildesheim Invaders and then Potsdam. They finally beat the Straubing Spiders but have not looked sharp.
In a battle of winless teams, the surprising New Yorker Lions travel to Kirchdorf to play the Wildcats. Braunschweig dropped decisions to Kiel, Paderborn and Dresden and for the first time in head coach Troy Tomlin’s long tenure find themselves 0-3 and in the cellar of the GFL North standings. The Wildcats are new to the GFL this season and have opened by losing to the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, Munich Cowboys and Berlin Rebels.
The Unicorns barely got by the Allgäu Comets beating them by one point to open the season but then downed Kirchdorf handily. They will face a Saarland Hurricanes team that lost two high scoring games to the Berlin Rebels and Comets but then beat Ravensburg. This may be the most entertaining game of the weekend.
Finally on Sunday, the undefeated Munich Cowboys travel to Ravensburg to take on the winless Razorbacks. Despite being without a loss, Munich has not impressed yet after beating the Straubing Spiders and Kirchdorf. Ravensburg lost to Allgäu, Straubing and the Saarland Hurricanes, all by convincing scores and need to right the ship to have any prospects of reaching the playoffs.
