German Football League stats leaders after a third of the season
With the German Football League regular season past the one third mark, AFI takes a look at the passing, receiving, rushing and tackling leaders for the first time this season.
Dresden Monarchs players lead two categories with WR Mitchel Paige the top receiver and LB AJ Wentland the leading tackler.
The Potsdam Royals have the most players in the four categories with four with Dresden second with three. They are followed by the Allgäu Comets, Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, Frankfurt Universe and Kiel Baltic Hurricanes with two each. The Ingolstadt Dukes, Cologne Crocodiles, Hamburg Huskies and Stuttgart Scorpions all have one. The one notable absence is the Braunschweig New Yorker Lions, who do not have a player on any of these lists, but the Lions have only played four games.
Passing
Allgäu Comets QB Justin Sottilare, not surprisingly, leads all passers in yardage with 1,810 yards and a league-best 20 TDs. Sottilare has set a record for passing attempts in a game (84), and leads the GFL in average yards per game by a wide margin with 452. The 2017 passing yards leader, Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns quarterback Marco Ehrenfried is 2nd with 1,480 yards while Trenton Norvell of the Dresden Monarchs is 3rd having thrown for 1,405 yards and 17 TDs. Austin Gahafer of the Potsdam Royals slides into 4th with 1,338 yards and 18 TDs while Ingolstadt Dukes QB Nelson Hughes III has thrown for 1,170 yards, good for 5th.
Receiving
Mitchell Paige of the Dresden Monarchs has caught 38 passes for 633 yards and a league-leading 10 TDs to lead Germany. Potsdam Royals Danish WR Frederik Myrup Nielsen has had an outstanding season so far and is 2nd with 553 yards. Comets WR Jordan Paul is 3rd with 532 while David Giron of the Frankfurt Universe is 4th with his 473 yards. Despite missing one game, Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns WR Tyler Rutenbeck is 5th and has 462 yard3.
Rushing
Cologne Crocodiles RB Shayeen Edwards tops the GFL in rushing yardage with 491 yards and 6 TDs and is averaging 123 yards rushing per game. Tyvis Smith of the Potsdam Royals is the 2nd leading rusher so far with 430 yards while Berlin Rebel’s Dutch RB Sean Richard is 3rd with 424 yards. The Rebels lead the league in team rushing. Julian Ampaw of the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes has moved into 4th with 372 while Frankfurt Universe RB Andreas Betza is the 5th leading rusher so far with 318.
Tackling
AJ Wentland of the Dresden Monarcsh tops the GFL with a whopping 70 tackles in five games.He has had two games of 20+ tackles. Kiel Baltic Hurricanes LB Thiadric Hansen is 2nd with 51 while the 2017 GFL tackling leader, Michael Taylor is 3rd with 47 tackles. Stuttgart Scorpions LB Josh Morgan has 45 tackles so far and is 4th. LB Demetrius Steed of the Potsdam Royals is 5th with 45 as well.
