Switzerland’s Geneva Seahawks have signed quarterback Shazzon Mumphrey for the 2021 season.
The Seahawks reached the Swiss final in both 2018 and 2019, losing both times to the Calanda Broncos.
Mumphrey spent the 2019 season with the Carlstad Crusaders and got off to a slow start, but despite splitting duties, finished with 873 yards passing and 12 TDs, helping the team reach the Swedish final.
The 6’3″, 225 lb 27 year old Mumphrey, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, spent two seasons at Florida A&M before transferring to the University of New Haven (NCAA Div. II) where he finished his career playing both quarterback and wide receiver. He spent the 2018 season with the Hildesheim Invaders of the German Football League where he threw for 1,137 yards and rushed for 365. He graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice in 2017 before signing with Denmark’s Triangle Razorbacks midway through the 2017 season, helping the team reach the Danish semifinals.
Seahawks head coach Larry Legault:
“Shazzon brings a lot to the table for our offense; firstly, he has a very solid knowledge of the game – it always helps when you have a player that wants to get into coaching down the road. Secondly, he possesses a varied skill set which will allow us to build on some of the things that we were planning when the 2020 season was cancelled. Thirdly, he’s not a kid, he’s played in Europe before and has a very good understanding of how things operate over here – this always helps in the transition. And lastly, but of considerable importance, I like his personality – I believe we have a good fit. We’re both looking forward to our collaboration.”
