Frankfurt Universe Overwhelm Spain’s Badalona Dracs To Advance To EFL Final
The Frankfurt Universe made no mistake Saturday as they dominated the Badalona Dracs from Spain in the final game of European Football League group play, defeating the Spanish squad 49-7.
The 5,000 hometown fans who braved the pouring rain at Frankfurter Volksbank Stadium, were treated to a football clinic from the Universe who exploded for 35 unanswered points in the first half and cruised to an easy victory.
This win, coupled with Frankfurt’s 48-0 drubbing of France’s Thonon Black Panthers, earns the Universe a berth in the EFL final against the Amsterdam Crusaders from Holland on June 11 in Frankfurt. The Crusaders defeated both the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes and Hamburg Huskies to reach the final.
Running back Jesse Lewis led the Universe with two touchdowns while quarterback Marcus McDade added one on the ground and threw for another to receiver George Robinson. David Giron scored on a 71 yard punt return and linebacker Aleks Milosevski returned an interception for a touchdown for the Universe. Finally Roscoe Baptist scored on a 15 yard run to round out the scoring for Frankfurt.
The constant downpour did not help the Dracs who rely on an all-out passing attack. Receiver Drew Clausen scored the lone touchdown for Badalona in the second half on a pass from Sergio Gonzalez.
The Universe, in its first year in the top league in Germany and initial foray into international competition, has opened the season in fine style. In addition to its two EFL victories, Frankfurt has lost a close contest to last year’s GFL finalists, the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns and defeated the Stuttgart Scorpions. Not bad for a newcomer to the German Football League.
