France: Marseille Blue Stars overwhelm Montpellier Hurricanes for season’s 2nd win
The Marseille Blue Stars improved to 2-0 this past weekend in whipping the Montpellier Hurricanes (0-2) 44-13 in French Federation of American Football Elite Division second-round action.
Behind a balanced offense, which gained 178 yards on the ground and 183 through the air, Marseille simply suffocated the Hurricanes scoring two touchdowns a quarter until the final period when they added one.
Blue Stars quarterback Kaleb Scott threw for 183 yards and three touchdowns with Vincent Monteiro catching two of those scoring passes and Florian Angelini hauling in the other. Running back Florian Monduc rumbled for 86 yards rushing and a touchdown while Angelini had 44 yards on the ground and the other rushing touchdown. Offensive lineman Nasser Assoumani recovered a fumble for a touchdown while defensive back Hadrian Lynda picked off a pass and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown.
The Blue Stars took charge early moving out to a 14-0 first quarter lead on touchdowns by Monteiro and Angelini. Lynda extended the lead to 20-0 early in the second quarter with a pick six and Monteiro’s second touchdown gave Marseille a 26-0 lead to 26-0 before Quentin Gramage finally got Montpellier on the board with a spectacular 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Angelini punched the ball in from the three-yard line to open the second half scoring, after the Marseille special teams recovered their own onside kick. Monduc then weaved his way through traffic to score from 15 yards out to increase the Blue Stars lead to 38-7.
Hurricanes backup quarterback Adrien Darmana snuck in from the two-yard line to reduce the lead to 38-13 .
The fourth quarter saw both teams slow down offensively. Assoumani rounded out the scoring recovering a fumble by his own running back in the end zone.
