The Aix-en-Provence Argonautes who play in France’s Elite – Casque de Diamant – division, have signed WR/DB Troy Rice for the 2019 season.
The Argonautes finished the 2018 season with a 2-8 record.
The 31 year old Rice, 6′, 205 lb, a native of Warren, Ohio, attended Youngstown State. He first arrived in Europe in 2015 playing for the Miskolc Steeler in Hungary. Since then he has played for the Nyíregyháza Tigers (2018), the Budapest Hurricanes and the Steelers in 2016 and 2017. He doubled up by also playing in Finland for the Kuovola Indians (2015, 2016, 2017) at the end of the Hungarian season. In 2016, he helped the Minsk Zubrs win the Ukrainian title as well as the Baltic Sea League championship. He was a key factor when the Uzhgorod Lumberjacks won the 2015 Ukrainian championship.
Rice made history in the Hungarian Football League last year when he became the first import player to reach the 50 touchdown plateau playing for the Miskolc Steelers.
When asked about how he arrived in Europe, Rice explained:
“In my sophomore year in college, I tore my right ACL. It took 8 to 10 months to recover. When I returned in 2011, I had the same injury in my left knee. Still, I had a shot to prove myself at the Cleveland Browns’ combine. I was not in my best shape, so I could not make it to the team. I had two shots. Either to hang up the cleats or try to play overseas. I heard about the Europlayers from a friend. I started reaching out to the teams and Joseph Szépe contacted me. He wanted to have me in Nyíregyháza. And that is how my trip to Europe started.”
