Weird and funny stories, interviews, bloopers, behind-the-scenes, stories about athletes are what they want.
So in this post, we recall four weird stories that happened to athletes or teams.
Butt Fumble Story
This story actually already has its own Wikipedia page and has entered the history of American football for the next generations to learn and wonder about. The 2012 season was a bit of a low point for the New York Jets, and to be honest, by that time it was kinda a two-decade-long low point.
And yet, it was not the worse because the worse was about to happen. On the Thanksgiving Day game against the New England Patriots, quarterback Mark Sanchez managed to do something that became one of the most hilarious and also one of the most infamous stories you could think of.
On 1st and 10 from their own 30, Sanchez snapped the ball and then completely botched a designed fake-toss/hand-off. Trying to squeeze the maximum from the play he understood was broken, Sanchez hurried forward and totally unexpectedly slid face-first into the posterior of his own right guard Brandon Moore.
As everyone was completely taken away by this entertaining scene, the ball popped loose and the Pats recovered the fumble for a touchdown.
This is and will probably remain one of the funniest stories for NFL for years, and the highlight of this moment was run at least once per day for the following five years.
Sticky Helmet Story
For many years, the Patriots showed brilliant results in the Super Bowl, but obviously not when they had to face the New York Giants. This was probably karma of some kind because twice in the biggest game of the season, the Patriots somehow lost for weird reasons to Eli Manning.
However, the weirdest story of a loss happened in 2008 in an unbelievable twist. Manning and seldom-used wide receiver David Tyree performed what can be called the most unrealistic throw-and-catch in NFL history. Manning escaped the pressure when trailing by 5 on third and five with 1:15 remaining, and hurled the ball over Tyree’s head.
What happened next was something no one can explain. Tyree pulled the ball down and the ball suddenly stuck to his helmet as if it had a magnet inside or something. The Patriots lost this time, and the story became one of the Super Bowl legends to be told to the next generations.
A Fan Showering with Football Champs
A weird and funny story took place during Super Bowl XIII when a fan somehow slipped into the Steelers’ locker room after the team won over the Cowboys.
One of the cameramen, Steve Sabol, went to the locker room to be one of the first to make behind-the-scenes videos when he suddenly noticed an unfamiliar face. The man he didn’t recognize was a “little bald guy” who obviously wasn’t part of the team and wasn’t a trainer and wasn’t an equipment guy.
Sabol recalled that he had spent enough time around the Steelers to recognize the team and most of the people who worked with the team but this man was not even close to being anyone he knew. So Sabol went up to Joe Greene at his locker to take an interview, and this unknown guy came out of the shower and started getting dressed near the locker next to Joe, and when Sabol asked Joe who that guy was Joe Greene said he didn’t know.
In fact, Sabol said that this unknown man started answering questions from the reporters until they realized he wasn’t actually an athlete. After that, he got dressed and went away, without actually identifying himself.
FBI Searches for a Stolen Jersey
After Super Bowl LI, Tom Brady reported that his jersey went missing. He was surprised and couldn’t locate it, started looking for it, and eventually, the whole thing was investigated by the FBI.
A teenager sparked the investigation and the FBI got involved to find out that a reported stolen the jersey. As they found out, it was not the first time this reporter had stolen. During the investigation, they found another Brady’s Super Bowl jersey and some memorabilia from the previous year’s game. In the end, they found videos of this reporter stealing these things. However, the reporter was not arrested because Brady didn’t want to press charges.
