Forty-nine year old American Herschel Currie has taken up a new challenge in his career in American football. The former NFL (Arizona Cardinals) cornerback is taking over as head coach of the Recife Pirates.
Despite the Pernambuco team experiencing financial difficulties, the new head coach accepted the offer to lead the team for six months free of charge, to allow time for managers to raise funds to sign him permanently.
“I have trained others players who are in a semi-professional level. I see no problem in people who need to buy equipment and pay for training, I don’t care. This shows that they love to play football.”
Offensive line coach Clayton Barreto believes that Currie’s teachings will make a difference on the team in the Superliga Nordeste.
“He’ll really help us develop and improve our skills. The other teams will be surprised, because we’re getting strong.”
The Pirates have qualified for the second round of Superliga Nordeste after defeating Roma Gladiadores in qualifying round. The team is in the Group North with Ceará Caçadores, América Bulls and Ufersa Petroleiros. The debut will be against Petroleiros in Recife. The date of the match has not yet been defined by Linefa.
