Finland: Porvoo Butchers sign Canadian WR Brandon Ihanza
The Porvoo Butchers have announced the signing of Canadian wide receiver Brandon Ihanza for the stretch run of the 2021 season.
The 6’1″, 211 pound Ihanza is a deep threat with outstanding speed and hands.
Ihanza replaces R.J. Long who tore his Achilles tendon in week 2 of the season.
Porvoo currently sits third in the Maple League standings with a 3-2 record and three games left in the regular season.
Butchers head coach Jim Nendel:
“We have been looking for the right fit with the team, someone who is a great person as well as a great player in the same mold as R.J. Fortunately, we had a great group of Finnish receivers that carried us forward while we searched for the right player, and we think Brandon fits that mold.”
Ihanza played his college ball at Saint Mary’s University in Canada and then played with the Okanagan Sun in the Canadian Junior Football League.
Asked about what he thinks of Finland so far Ihanza had only good things to say:
“I love it here, Porvoo is beautiful, and it is quiet and relaxed. I have really enjoyed my time so far.”
As far as being with the Butchers, he remarked,
“I love this team already. It is a family, and everyone has been so welcoming. I’m really enjoying it; I feel like I fit in here and people have been so kind and warm. Jabari, Coach, and the receivers have welcomed me in. I’m excited to help however I can. I’m ready to help win a championship!”
Nendel is clearly happy with his new addition:
“Brandon came in and immediately jumped into his role and is a very hard worker in practice. It’s obvious that he is a great talent, but when you interact with him you realize that he is driven but with a playful side. He makes the whole place smile with his enthusiasm.”
Ihanza will see his first action this week versus the Kuopio Steelers. Watch the game live here on AFI.tv. Porvoo Butchers @ Kuopio Steelers, August 14, 15:30 CET (3:30 pm, 09:30 am ET)
