The Leipzig Kings have announced the signing of former Tennessee Tech and Fujitsu Frontiers (Japan) quarterback Michael Birdsong for the 2021 season.
The 27 year old, 6’4″, 234 pound Birdsong from Matoaca, Virginia is coming off three seasons in Japan’s XLeague (arguably the best league in the world outside of North America) where, while playing for the Fujitsu Frontiers, he won two championships (2018, 2019) and was named league MVP in his final season (2020) after leading the team to the championship final. In his three years, he threw 39 touchdown passes while scoring another 11 touchdowns on the ground.
Playing at three different NCAA Division 1 schools – Tennessee Tech (senior year), Marshall (junior year) and James Madison (freshman, sophomore years) – Birdsong threw for 6,178 yards and 45 touchdowns while rushing for 766 yards and nine scores. He started at James Madison but a coaching change altered his status. At Marshall, he suffered a season-ending injury in his second game. He wound up his career at Tennessee Tech where he blossomed, throwing for 2,577 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Leipzig head coach Fred Armstrong:
“Michael is a championship QB who I am fortunate enough to work with in the next two to three seasons in Leipzig.”
Birdsong is happy about the chance to play in Germany:
“I’m excited about the opportunity to join the Leipzig Kings and Coach Armstrong in the first season of the ELF. I’m looking forward to playing against the best competition in Europe and leading Leipzig on the field this upcoming season. “
