The Vienna Vikings have signed their first American import for their inaugural season in the European league of football, coming to terms with receiver Diondre Overton. The former Clemson Tiger is excited to be heading to the Austrian capital:
“I am extremely excited to announce that I will be joining the Vienna Vikings. They have given me an opportunity to get back into doing what I love and that’s football”
The 6’4″, 210 pound pass-catcher won two national championships during his time with the Clemson Tigers (NCAA D1 ACC). Playing in 51 games, the Greensboro, North Carolina native put up 52 catches for 777 yards and seven touchdowns while playing alongside NFL receivers Mike Williams, Hunter Renfrow, Amari Rodgers, and Tee Higgins. In the midst of a crowded receiver room Overton earned praise from Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney:
“He’s a very intelligent player and he’s so much stronger. He’s done an awesome job with his body”
Before heading to Death Valley, Overton was a four-star recruit who held offers from NC State, Boston College, Michigan, Tennessee, and West Virginia. The 23-year-old recently signed a deal with the Canadian Football Leagues Hamilton Tiger–Cats this past June, only to be released less than a month later.
The Vikings stay in the news cycle this off-season as they recently announced the addition of linebacker Thomas Schnurrer, along with Austrian national team defensive back Florian Albrecht. Now with the signing of Overton, the team’s key players begin to take shape. The Clemson product looks forward to being a leader in the Vikings locker room this season:
“My ultimate goal is to come in and develop a leadership roll with this team. I want to leave an impact on and off the field and create the best atmosphere for myself and others around me to be successful”
