The Stuttgart Surge have announced that they have signed American wide receiver Bryce Nunnelly ahead of the 2023 European League of Football season.
The 24 year old native of Cleveland, Tennessee spent this past season with the powerhouse Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns of the German Football League. Arguably the best team in Europe last season, the Unicorns went 10-0 in league play in the regular season and coasted to a German Bowl victory. Nunnelly joined the team late in the year, in September, and made a decent impact in a short time. He played in the semifinal and the championship game in the playoffs, recording a combined three catches for 71 yards and a touchdown in those games.
Notably, Stuttgart’s new head coach is Jordan Neuman, who left the Unicorns after eight seasons to start a new chapter in the ELF. Nunnelly’s brief stint with Neuman in Germany was clearly remarkable for both the player and the coach, as the two Americans will be reuniting in Germany in the coming months.
Before coming to Europe, Nunnelly played football collegiately for a pair of NCAA Division I programs – FCS-level University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and FBS-level Western Michigan. At Chattanooga, he was named to the first team All-Southern Conference in both 2018 and 2019. His best statistical season came in 2018, when he recorded 79 catches for 1,237 yards and seven touchdowns for the Mocs. After a period of inactivity due to COVID-19, Nunnelly joined Western Michigan of the MAC in the 2021 season, recording 10 catches for 114 yards for the Broncos. After graduating, Nunnelly briefly spent time with the Tennessee Titans and the Kansas City Chiefs in their rookie mini camps but was unable to latch on to the roster.
On joining the Surge, Nunnelly was excited:
“I am excited and grateful for this opportunity to play for the Stuttgart Surge for the 2023 season. The franchise has a bright future, and I am excited to play alongside and compete against great talent from all over Europe. This is an exceptional opportunity for me to continue to improve myself both professionally and personally, on and off the field.”
