ELF: Berlin Thunder sign 6’5 former DI QB Donovan Isom
The Berlin Thunder of the European Football League have signed former DI quarterback Donovon Isom.
Isom is an experienced dual-threat quarterback with a massive frame who spent the last two seasons playing in the German capital city for the Rebels. Now he’s ready for a new challenge in a city he knows well:
“I’m very humbled and blessed to have the opportunity to play for the Berlin Thunder in the ELF. I just want to thank God for allowing me to continue to play this great game for a great organization. I’m ready to help contribute on the direction that Berlin is building towards. I’m ready for the challenges ahead and I can’t wait to get started!”
The 6’4 250-pound passer has spent the last two seasons as the starting quarterback for the Berlin Rebels of the German Football League. This past summer, the 28-year-old passer threw for 2,686 yards and 26 touchdowns and only four interceptions. Using his size well, he also added 165 yards and ten scores, helping the Rebels finish the year third in total offense, their highest output in franchise history. The season prior, Isom joined the Rebels late in the summer and was an immediate upgrade at the quarterback position.

Isom, who calls Destrehan, Louisiana home, came to Europe after a journeyman college career featuring stops at Texas Wesleyan (NAIA), Southeastern Louisiana (D1 FCS) and Utah (D1 Pac-12). Isom began his career as a backup at Utah before transferring back to his home state at Southeastern Louisiana. After two seasons playing off and on there, he was once again on the move, this time to the NAIA program, Texas Wesleyan.
At his new home, Isom made history by helping the Rams win their first game since cancelling football in the 1940s and reigniting the program in 2017. Isom finished his Rams career with 2,300 passing yards and 21 total touchdowns in 12 games.

The well-traveled quarterback is part of a new era in Berlin as he takes over from the recently retired Joe Germinerio. Isom will have several top flight weapons as the Thunder have recently signed GFL All-Star receiver Aaron Jackson, former CFL receiver Max Zimmerman, and have re-signed Robin Wilzek and tight end Nicolai Schumann.
