ELF: Berlin Thunder Co-Owner/Sports Director and former NFL star Björn Werner announces departure from team

There had been rumors and just a week after the end of the regular season they became true as Björn Werner, co-owner of the Berlin Thunder and also the team’s Sports Director, announced he was leaving the team.

The 34 year old native of Berlin was a first round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in the 2013 NFL Draft. He had played at Florida State and spent three years with the Colts before being released and getting picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016. He announced his retirement from professional football in January of 2017, citing ongoing injury problems.

Werner had been the face of the Thunder since stepping into the role in 2022.

Werner explained the reasons for his departure:

“After careful consideration, I have decided to step down from my role as Sports Director and Co-Owner of Berlin Thunder with immediate effect.

“The main reason for this decision is my family. The past few years have been incredibly intense, and the challenges of leading a successful football team have required a lot of time and energy. As a husband and father, it’s important for me to use the NFL offseason to fully dedicate myself to my family and other activities. This time is invaluable to me, and I don’t want to miss it.

“I am proud of what we have achieved with Berlin Thunder and grateful for the support and trust I have received over the years. I am confident that the team will continue to be successful in the future, and I look forward to following its progress as a fan.

“I want to thank everyone who has supported me along the way—especially the fans! I wish Berlin Thunder nothing but the best.”

His replacement has yet to be decided.
