El Salvador set to hold meeting to plan for 2021 football season

Steve Ágreda, Commissioner of the Salvadoran American Football Association Intramuros (SAAIF), has announced a meeting to organize football in El Salvador in 2021.

Following the  organizational meeting of SAAIF set for Sunday, January 31, Ágreda will provide details of the objectives they have as a sport in the country for 2021, and also the restart of training and preseason of both male and female teams. Ágreda said that COVID-19 has given many of the players uncertainty, but they hope to return to the playing fields soon.

“The meeting on January 31 is an organizational meeting, which is usually held every year in December to plan and make changes to regulations or operation of the tournament to follow. Unfortunately due to the same pandemic it was postponed until the end of January .”

The process of getting this sport accepted as a federation within the INDES (National Institute of Sports in El Salvador), the governing body of sport in this Central American country is ongoing.

Ágreda explains:

“The Executive Committee of INDES recognized the sport prior to the end of the year (moving from association to federation) so now what is left is getting the legal record of said joint recognition. Then the men’s and women’s tournaments and  international meetings of the national teams can be organized. We also need to deal with showing the key Central American games of 2022.”

This year 16 teams are expected to participate, eight men’s teams and eight women’s.

Ágreda:

“The women’s league would be starting, if all goes well, at the beginning of April while the men will kick off in May, with games from June to November if the pandemic allows it.”

Another objective of the meeting is the planning of the season and the tournament: “Bowl of La Nación-2021″, but one of the focuses of the return of American football  is compliance with the COVID-19 protocols required to start training and competitions. It is essential to adhere to the plans issued by the National Institute of Sports of El Salvador (INDES).

“We have more than 500 athletes from San Miguel to Sonsonate, expanding throughout the country, 16 teams (eight for men and eight for women), 24 teams from the mixed Flag Football league, not forgetting the Men’s National Team, BIG BLUE and women’s, the Liberty Hawks and also for this year, the women’s flag team.”
