Playing in front of a wildly cheering home crowd of 2,600 spectators, the Dresden Monarchs exacted revenge for a close defeat last week to the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes, trouncing the visiting Hurricanes 56-14.
Dresden jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead at Heinz-Steyer Stadium in Dresden and then coasted to a surprisingly easy win. Kiel defeated the Monarchs 35-30 a week ago in Kiel.
Quarterback Brandon Connette threw five touchdown passes, two each to Sebastien Sagne and Mickey Kyei and one to Hendrik Hinrichs. Running back Joseph Bergeron added two on the ground while defensive back Jonas Gacek took an interception back 55 yards for Dresden’s final points late in the game. Dresden kicker Franz Kammel was good on all seven PATs.
The Monarchs took charge early as Connette connected with Sagne twice and Dresden’s defense forced a Kiel fumble. Connette capitalized hitting Kyei for Dresden’s third touchdown of the first quarter giving the Monarchs a commanding 21-0 lead before the second quarter had started.
The onslaught continued in the second quarter as the Hurricanes, clearly rattled, could not mount an offense and Bergeron pounded the ball in from eight yards out and then Kyei hauled in a 53 yard scoring pass from Connette.
The shell-shocked Hurricanes fared no better in the second half as Bergeron scored again, this time on a 20 yard run. Finally, late in the third quarter Kiel quarterback Logan Schrader marched his team down the field and capped the drive with an eight yard touchdown run to make the score 42-7 Dresden.
The Monarchs showed they were not going to let up as Connette threw a 76 yard bomb to Hinrichs while Gacek picked off a Schrader pass giving Dresden a 56-7 lead. Kiel running back Chris McClendon, finally found some running room late in the game scampering for a 47 yard touchdown.
With the win, Dresden improved their record to 2-1-1, moving the into third place in the GFL North, behind the surprising Berlin Rebels and division leading Braunschweig New Yorker Lions who sit in first at 3-0.
