Denmark captures 6th straight men’s gold at IFAF European Flag Football Championships
Team Denmark defeated Italy 52-35 in the gold medal final to win the IFAF European Flag Football Championship for the sixth consecutive time this past Sunday at the Kraft Family Stadium in Jerusalem.
Denmark went undefeated throughout the entire tournament and simply had too much firepower for the Italians in the final.
The teams had met earlier in the tournament with Denmark earning a narrow 40-39 victory over Team Italy.
The winning trophy was a replica of the New England Patriots 2019 Super Bowl Trophy, donated by Robert Kraft, billionaire owner of the Patriots.
Danish head coach Jacob Espersen:
“This was huge to win gold again. We are the winningest nation in Europe and it felt great to continue the tradition. Everything just clicked for us in the final. The defense was super sharp and all our players showed a lot of character.”
The Danes had beaten Team France in the semifinal 46-39.
Denmark marched through the tournament winning all their five group round games, first downing Switzerland 46-6, Italy 40-39 and France 26-6 on Day 1 of the event. Day 2 saw the Danish squad get past both Great Britain and Russia to advance to the semifinal round unbeaten.
Espersen was more than happy with the win and the trophy:
“This is crazy. Now we have an NFL trophy to take back home with us.”
