Danish Lineman Frederik Fabricius signs at Indiana State
Frederik Fabricius from Sorø, Denmark is the latest addition to the growing list of Danes now playing college football at the highest level
In the upcoming season there will be no fewer than six Danes at some of the best colleges in the United States.
And interestingly enough, almost all of them are offensive linemen. This is also the case with 20-year-old Frederik Hejbøl Fabricius, who received a scholarship to play for the Indiana State Sycamores (NCAA Div. I FCS).
Fabricius began his career with the Slagelse Wolfpack in 2012 and the following year earned a spot on the Danish U17 national team. He was also selected for the U19 national team, but here he chose instead to attend high school in the United States, where he played for Lumiere High School in the state of Indiana from 2014 to 2016.
The 6’6″, 305 lb West Zealander finished his high school in the past year and signed with Indiana State to continue his career there.
In 2015, Fabricius participated in a big-man training camp in Michigan for offensive and defensive linemen, and it was here that colleges took notice of the size of the then 19-year-old Dane. He and Danish teammate Steven Nielsen were described by one college scout:
“La Lumiere High School sent two massive rising seniors in Steven Nielsen and Frederik Fabricius. Nielsen is a very intriguing athlete with the size (6-8, 321 pounds) and skill set udvikle into a big time college tackle and possibly beyond that. Also Fabricius har great size (6-6, 305 pounds) and is also powerful. Nielsen has a Ball State offer, but both guys put themselves in position for more.”
Steven Nielsen got an offer from Eastern Michigan Eagles, where he played all the games last season, while Fabricius only now embarking on his college career.
Fabricius will have to fight to get playing time in his first season at Indiana State, but if he succeeds he can mark September 9th on his calendar when the Sycamores play the Tennessee Volunteers, Peyton Manning’s alma mater.
