Exclusive: Dacia Vienna Vikings welcome QB-Guru, former Buffalo Bills & St. Louis Rams OC, Steve Fairchild as guest coach
Former Buffalo Bills and St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild has arrived in Vienna, Austria where he will spend a couple of weeks acting as a consultant for the Dacia Vienna Vikings.
Vikings head coach Chris Calaycay is thrilled to have Fairchild, whose resume and background is beyond impressive, in Austria to help take the Vikings program to another level:
“These next two weeks will be very exciting and fruitful for us Vikings. Steve Fairchild is a well-respected coach in football and had worked with the best in the business. Steve will observe, evaluate and deliver a different perspective on things – things we need to improve on as well as things we do well. We are very excited to have Coach Fairchild with us in the upcoming weeks.”
Fairchild’s resume is impeccable. The 58-year-old native of Decatur, Illinois played at Colorado State and began his coaching career at San Diego Mesa Community College (his alma mater) before stints with Ferris State, San Diego State, New Mexico, and Colorado State. He entered the NFL as running backs coach for the Buffalo Bills from 2001-2002. He was signed as offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams (2003-2005) before returning to the Bills in the same capacity for the 2006-2007 seasons.
He was hired by Colorado State as head coach in 2007 where he remained until 2011. In 2012, the San Diego Chargers brought Fairchild in as a special assignments coach before he moved to the University of Virginia as offensive coordinator until the 2015 season. He currently runs the Fairchild Quarterback Training program in Colorado.
“I am very much looking forward to the opportunity to guest coach with the Vienna Vikings. I met Chris in Germany last November and was impressed with him and his staff. I know this will be a great opportunity to teach Quarterbacks and have some real interaction regarding football with the Dacia Vienna Vikings.”
Calaycay explains that Fairchild will be kept busy during his stay in Vienna:
“Steve will be working directly on the field with our quarterbacks from team 1 and team 2 as well as our playmakers of the Vikings youth program. There will be a special emphasis on techniques and skill development. Steve will also be working with us coaches in the office on schemes and tactics. I already know that he will have a significant impact on the development of our football philosophy. We are very happy that he agreed on being our pre-season guest coach. The cherry on the top is having Steve as the opening keynote speaker of our 1st Vienna Football Assembly* on Friday, February 21st at the House Of Sport here in Vienna. He is truly someone who raises the standard of your game.”
