The reigning Danish champions, the Copenhagen Towers wasted no time in teaching the newly-promoted Frederikssund Oaks a lesson, whipping them 40-0 at Gentofte, Denmark on the weekend.
Copenhagen exploded for 40 first half points and then eased off and cruised to the win.
With the Towers up by more than 35 points, the mercy rule kicked in automatically in the second half, meaning that the clock never stopped.
Quarterback Patrick Hargett threw touchdown passes to Marcus Bennett, Aske Troen and Philip Thue, Kasper Skyum threw a touchdown pass to Thue and running back Dayton Winn scored two touchdowns on the ground.
All in the first half.
This was the first game in Denmark’s National League for the Oaks since 2004 and it showed.
Despite the resounding win, Towers head coach Peter Herbild was not happy as he explained to Nationalligaen.dk:
“I have never had an opening game where I’ve been really happy. There are always so many things to be addressed. But it’s nice to get it out of the way and have some things that can be corrected.”
The Towers took a 13-0 lead in the first quarter as Hargett hit Bennett and then Toren.
The second quarter was a nightmare for Frederikssund as Winn put on a show which included a 50 yard touchdown run and a six yard scamper into the end zone. Thue scored his two touchdowns on passes from Skyum and then Hargett with Troen kicking four extra points.
Despite the lopsided defeat, the Oaks came away knowing that they held Copenhagen scoreless in the short second half.
Next up for Copenhagen is the opening game of the Northern European Football League, NEFL, against the Oslo Vikings, April 14.
