Caleb Williams could break the NFL records for times sacked, yards lost in a season

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is taking far more sacks, and losing far more yards, than any other quarterback in the NFL. And he may finish the season with more sacks and yards lost than any other quarterback in NFL history.

Through 13 games, Williams has been sacked 56 times (15 more than any other quarterback this season) and lost 377 yards on sacks (50 more than any other quarterback this season). That’s bad.

But what’s worse is the historical pace that puts him on. With four games to go, Williams is on pace to take 73 sacks and lose 493 yards on sacks this season. Both of those would threaten NFL records.

The NFL record for times sacked in a season is 76, set by David Carr on the expansion Texans in 2002. And the NFL record for yards lost on sacks is 489, set by Randall Cunningham in 1986. So Williams is slightly behind pace for the most times sacked ever, and slightly ahead of pace for the most yards lost on sacks ever.

On Sunday against the 49ers, Williams got sacked seven times and lost 46 yards. If there’s one thing Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown needs to get fixed over the next four weeks, that’s it.
