Bucharest Rebels, Timisoara 89ers Soar in Romania
The second weekend of the 2016 season in Romania featured two different football games. The Cluj Crusaders proved to be no match for the defending champions, the Bucharest Rebels while the Timisoara 89ers showed that they are a good road team in blanking the Mures Monsters.
Bucharest Rebels (1-0) 34 – Cluj Crusaders (1-1) 6
On Saturday, April 2, the Cluj Crusaders traveled over 400km to Romania’s capital to take on 2015 CNFA National Champions, the Bucharest Rebels, in a rematch of last year’s RoBowl 6.
The Crusaders hesitated in the beginning of the game and the hosts took advantage. Rebels‘ quarterback Alex Craciun took advantage of a free play hit a wide open receiver deep putting Bucharest up 7-0.
The Rebels extended their lead to 14-0 at the half after a fumble by Crusaders quarterback Paul Carja, was picked up by a Rebels defender and returned for the second touchdown.
In the second half, the Rebels continued to dominate the scrimmage line while increasing their lead. The final score was 34-6 for the Bucharest team.
Timisoara 89ers (2-0) 12 – Mures Monsters (0-2) 0
On Sunday, April 3 at Targu Mures, the Mures Monsters hosted the Timisoara 89ers. The game was excellent with both teams challenging each other and leaving it all on the field. Timisoara won the game, led by the powerful duo of quarterback Tamaş Szabo and wide receiver Valentin Cocrean who combined for both touchdowns in the game. The final score was 12 – 0 for the 89ers.
This was the last weekend when two games will be played in the regular season. From now on, only one game will be played every weekend starting with 16th – 17th of April when the Bucharest Rebels will travel to Timisoara to take on the 89ers.
