With the BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sports) American Football Premier Final approaching this weekend between the Birmingham Lions and the Stirling Clansmen, it is fitting to look back on the last time these two teams faced each other in a championship final.
In 2014, the Lions had reached the previous national title games six of eight times and won it three times, the last time the previous year. The Clansmen though had made a meteoric rise through university football in the UK in 2014. So it was the old facing the new that year.
The game was a classic. The Lions had beaten Stirling in the quarterfinal in 2013 on their way to the title. In 2014, both teams entered the game undefeated and they had arrived in the final in dominant form. So the game was already a rematch of sorts. The game did not disappoint as it had everything with Stirling coming out on top to win their first championship.
There were some great plays in this one. Pay particular attention to Stirling Clansmen defensive end Austin Jack’s “pick 6” in the third quarter.
