Big6 Starts 3rd Season: Battle for Eurobowl XXX begins in France
The Big6 football tournament, which pits six of Europe’s top teams against each other, kicks off Saturday as Austria’s Vienna Vikings head to France to face the Aix en Provence Argonautes at the Complex Sportive Maurice David.
For the eight-time French champion Argonautes, it is their debut in the Big6.
The Austrians on the other hand are playing in their third season in the BIG6.
The Vikings have won the Eurobowl a record five times and travel to France feeling confident. Vienna has already won two games in the Austrian league, a 31-0 blanking of the Danube Dragons and a home opening 16-7 win over Slovenia’s Ljubljana Silverhawks.
Vienna Head Coach Chris Calaycay:
“The Vienna Vikings are looking forward to the BIG6 game versus the Argonautes. This will be the first time the teams have played since 2000 in Eurobowl group play. We are expecting a tough opponent and preparing for a fast and physical football game.“
But the host Argonautes also enter the game 2-2 in French league play after beating the Templiers d’Elancourt 39-12 and defeating the Thonon Black Panthers 20-16 but dropping losses to Nice and St. Ouen.
The three-team group includes the Braunschweig New Yorker Lions, reigning Eurobowl champion. The Lions play their first Big 6 game against the Vikings on April 24.
In the other group the Swarco Raiders Tirol, the Berlin Adler and the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns fight for a place in the European final.
