Belgian American Football League league kicks off 32nd season
The Belgian American Football League, BAFL, kicks off its 2019 season Sunday, February 10 with a pair of games.
Since its inception in 1987, 13 different teams have won the BAFL title. This year, eight teams will battle to reach Belgian Bowl XXXII.
Four teams will take the field on opening day.
The 2018 surprise finalists, the Limburg Shotguns, will face league newcomers, the Tournai Phoenix while the Brussels Tigers, winners of three Belgian titles (2002, 2012, 2013) will take on the 2018 semifinalists, the Antwerp Argonauts.
BAFL defending champions and heavy favorites to win their third straight, the Brussels Black Angels, who have not lost a game to a Belgian team since the 2016 championship game when they lost to the Ostend Pirates 16-15, open their season next weekend when they take on the Liege Monarchs. The final two teams in the league, the Ostend Pirates and Charleroi Coal Miners, square off next weekend as well.
The regular season winds up on June 2 with the BAFL semifinals scheduled for June 15/16 and Belgian Bowl XXXII June 29.
The Brussels Black Angels have won the Belgian title four times (2018, 2017, 2015 & 2003) , with 12 appearances in the championship game. The now defunct West Flanders Tribes (Izeghem Redskins) have won the most titles in Belgium with eight.
