The Barbarians defended their Uruguayan title Saturday by downing the Golden Bulls 25-8 in the finals of the Torneo Clausura tournament, retaining the Daniel Bilche Cup. This was the fifth Liga Uruguaya de Football Americano (LUFA) title for the Barbarians since 2005.
Running back Guillermo Troytiño paced the Barbarians with two rushing touchdowns while quarterback Alejandro Mirande threw touchdown passes to Federico Duty and Felipe Poggio. Running back Williams Fernandez was also outstanding for the victors.
The Bulls only touchdown was scored by quarterback Luis Terra and Federico Mutter added the two-point conversion.
On a rain-drenched field, the Golden Bulls could not establish a consistent offense as the Barbarians defense managed to contain the highly complex schemes of the Bulls.
The Barbarian team capped an excellent season. Despite going unbeaten in the first half of the season, the Barbarians had to win the final two games of the year to capture the title.
