One of Europe’s best, Austria’s Swarco Tirol Raiders, has signed their quarterback for 2015.
Earlier this week, it was announced that Sean Shelton will be going to Innsbruck to wear the black and silver. Shelton played last season with the Helsinki Roosters and won the Finnish Maple League championship.
Coming to Helsinki midway through the Roosters season to replaced the injured Robert Johnson, Shelton completed 126 of his 227 passes (55.5%) for 1,442 yards in only seven games. He threw for 16 touchdowns with only two interceptions. He also rushed 83 times for 530 yards and five more scores.
Earlier in 2014, Shelton played in France with the Elancourt Templiers. In nine games in the French top league as well as against IFAF Europe Champions League opponents, he went 131 of 223 for 2,159 yards with 27 touchdowns and three interceptions. On the ground he ran for 354 yards on 45 attempts for three touchdowns.
Shelton comes from William Jewell College (NCAA Division II). For the Cardinals, he started 41 games, and was selected in as Offensive MVP every year from 2010 to 2013.
AFI caught up with Shelton shortly after his signing was announced.
After leading the Helsinki Roosters and the Elancourt Templiers in 2014, what made you choose Austria and the Raiders for 2015?
I chose the Raiders and the AFL because they have both separated themselves from the pack from an organizational and professional stand point. After speaking with Coach Shuan (Fatah) and hearing his point of view and vision, I knew the Raiders were the right team for me.
Many people say that Austria has the best American football outside of of the U.S.; did this factor enter into your decision to play in Innsbruck?
It absolutely factored into my decision. Ever since I came to Europe last year, I have desired to play the best of the best. So I am excited to be in an environment that is highly competitive and where a lot of people are passionate about American football.
What are you most looking forward to playing with the Raiders?
I am looking forward to playing the best competition in Europe with a very established team such as the Raiders. I have heard nothing but good things about their organization and I am looking forward to contributing to their excellence.
