Austria kicks off 2021 season March 27
The Austrian Football League, AFL, will kick off the 2021 season on March 27 with six teams playing an eight game regular season.
The Dacia Vienna Vikings, Projekt Spielberg Graz Giants, Swarco Raiders Tirol, SsangYong Danube Dragons, Mödling Rangers and Prague Black Panthers will start the season on March 27 with the regular season winding up on July 3. The playoffs will take place on July 17/18 with Austrian Bowl XXXVI scheduled for July 31 in St. Pölten.
All of this is subject to the COVID-19 situation but according to Austrian Federation of American Football, AFBÖ, president Michael Eschlböck, this has been taken into account in drawing up the schedule:
“We are pleased that the league can start in just under six weeks. The hope is alive that spectators will be allowed to a certain extent. The schedule is designed in such a way that there is also room for postponements – which we hope will not be necessary.”
The AFBÖ is currently assuming that the championship game can take place with preventive measures in place and with spectators. However, according to the federation, a number of different scenarios are being planned in order to be prepared for all eventualities.
