For the seventh year in a row, American Football Without Barriers (AFWB), will be bringing football camps and clinics to a foreign country, this time Germany.
AFWB is a US charity founded by former NFL player Gary Barnidge along with Breno Giacomini and Ahmed Awadallah. AFWB’s goal is to spread the game of American Football around the world and help with youth charities, while doing just that.
After successful camps in China, Brazil, Turkey, Egypt, Finland and Portugal, AFWB is headed to Germany, but it has required some extra planning.
Planning in Portugal
On a cold, rainy February day in 2018, during preparations for the AFWB camp that was held in Algarve, Portugal, Andreas Kegelmann, the Sport Director for the Northern Rhein Westfalen American Football League, and Lance Heron, a Canadian football coach and coordinator of the AFWB NFL players camp in Portugal, met and hatched a plan to bring American Football Without Barriers and its NFL players to Germany. With the help of Heiko Kurzawa, owner and security expert at H2K Security, the band of brothers has succeeded in their goal.
The AFWB camps in Germany will host more than 16 current and former NFL Players, in Oberhausen, Germany, located 29 kilometers from Dusseldorf, on the February 22, 23 and 24, 2019. The camps are available to youth, women and men and are open to new and experienced players alike.
It is rare for players like DeAngelo Williams, Alex Mack, Austin Hooper, Jabaal Sheard, and many other elite players, to come together to do camps for free. But every year, AFWB does just that. The camps in Germany are expected to be the largest ever held, in AFWB’s seventh year.
At the Centro Mall in Oberhausen, on February 22, 2019, the NFL players will be signing autographs for all in attendance. On February 23 and 24, in König Pilsner arena, the players will be leading free camps and will also instruct coaches clinics.
During the weekend there will also be cheerleading demonstrations, an NFL Fan club meeting and EA Sports will be hosting a Madden egames Tournament.
The camps will be followed closely on the Pro Sieben Maxx TV network and by other media from around the world.
