With the German Football League back in action after a three-week hiatus, there was a full slate of games throughout Europe this past weekend in including the Austrian Football League title game, Austrian Bowl XXXVI.
Along with the GFL and AFL, the Finnish Maple League, the European League of Football, and the Czech League of American Football were all in action.
Austrian Bowl XXXVI
The Swarco Raiders definitely atoned for a late-season slump in the Austrian Football League by winning 2021 Austrian Bowl in a dominating performance, beating the Dacia Vienna Vikings 35-14 after taking a 28-0 halftime lead.
Czech League of American Football
In the Czech league, the Vysocina Gladiators staged the upset of the weekend, downing the defending Czech champions, the Prague Lions, 28-26.
The Brno Alligators (1-2) captured their first win of the Czech league 2021 season in beating the winless (0-3) Prerov Mammoths 30-26.
European League of Football
The unbeaten Hamburg Sea Devils (6-0) found themselves trailing the surprising 1-5 Barcelona Dragons 17-16 in the fourth quarter of their ELF matchup before kicker Philip Friis Andersen kicked two of his five field goals on the day to put the game away for Hamburg as they beat Barcelona 22-17.
The 2-4 Leipzig Kings zoomed out to a 27-8 halftime lead against the Berlin Thunder (1-5) and then cruised to a comfortable 37-24 win in their ELF game this past weekend.
In other ELF play, the 5-1 Frankfurt Galaxy overwhelmed an undermanned Stuttgart Surge (1-5) squad, whipping them 57-3.
In the surprise upset of the weekend in the ELF, the Cologne Centurions (4-2) handed the Wroclaw Panthers (3-3) their third loss of the season, beating them 33-31 in a come-from-behind victory.
Finnish Maple League
The Seinäjoki Crocodiles improved their record in Finland’s Maple League to 3-3 after beating the winless United Newland Crusaders (0-5) to hold onto the fourth and final playoff spot with two games to go.
The Helsinki Wolverines (3-4) remain in the hunt for a playoff spot in the Maple League after defeating the Wasa Royals (1-5) 26-20 this past weekend in Finland.
In a battle of the unbeatens in the Maple League, the Kuopio Steelers (6-0) downed the Helsinki Roosters (4-1) 35-32 in what could be a precursor to the Maple Bowl.
German Football League
The Kiel Baltic Hurricanes (2-4) won their second straight game after opening the season with four consecutive losses, defeating the 1-5 Berlin Rebels 28-15 in GFL North action.
The Allgäu Comets (3-1) took a 32-17 third-quarter lead against the Ravensburg Razorbacks (3-3) in the GFL South and then withstood a late Razorbacks rally to come away with a 32-29 victory.
The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (5-0) showed no mercy in their GFL South matchup with the (0-5) Frankfurt Universe, crushing the Universe 77-0.
The Saarland Hurricanes (5-1) were simply on fire in their GFL South matchup with the Marburg Mercenaries, taking a 30-0 halftime lead and going on to overwhelm Marburg 51-6.
The Braunschweig New Yorker Lions (3-3) used the July break to add seven new players to the lineup and it showed as they steadily pulled away from the Cologne Crocodiles (3-3) through all four quarters to earn a solid 43-28 win in this GFL North encounter.
