The 2018 IFAF European Championships are heading into their final day of competition with both medal games and the fifth place game scheduled for Saturday, August 4.
Gold Medal Game – Team Austria (2-0) v. Team France (2-0) – August 4 7p Local Finnish time (6p CEST)
Team Austria and Team France will face each other for the first time ever in a gold medal game to decide the winner of the European Championship. Austria played in a group also containing Team Sweden and Team Denmark. The Austrians defeated Denmark 40-15 on the opening day of the tournament and then handled Sweden, beating them 41-3 to close out the group stage.
Team France, playing in the other group along with Great Britain and the host country, Finland, downed Great Britain in their first game 42-9 and then defeated a tough Team Finland 21-14.
Bronze Medal Game – Team Finland (1-1) v. Team Sweden (1-1) – August 4, 3p Local Finnish time (2p CEST)
In the bronze medal game, Finland (1-1) will take on their arch rivals, Team Sweden (1-1). The Finns won their first game of the tournament, defeating Great Britain 28-7 but then lost a close battle to Team France, 21-14. Sweden downed the Danes 30-20 in their first game but then were overwhelmed by Team Austria losing 41-3.
Fifth Place Game – Team Denmark (0-2) v. Team Great Britain (0-2) – August 4, 11a Local Finnish time (10a CEST)
Denmark (0-2), who have only played in this tournament once before (2014), opened the tournament by losing to Austria 40-15 after only trailing 20-15 going into the fourth quarter. They then lost to Sweden 30-20. Great Britain opened against Team Finland, losing 28-7 but keeping the Finns off the scoreboard in the second half. They then went on to lose to France 42-9 in their final group stage game.
