France’s 2016 championship game – Casque de Diamant – pits the defending champion St. Ouen Cougars against the Nice Dauphins who are playing in the French championship game for the first time in their history.
Ironically, when the Cougars won the title in 2015 it was their first appearance in the final.
The Cougars, who finished first the French league during the regular season, defeated La Courneuve Flash 27-21 to reach the final. The third place Dauphins downed the Aix en Provence Argonautes 29-14 in the other semifinal.
In the only meeting between the two teams in 2016, Nice came away with a tight 31-28 victory. The Dauphins running back Rondell White was unstoppable in that contest gaining 220 yards on 21 carries and scoring two touchdowns. In fact, White has been the key to the Dauphins offense all season.
St. Ouen quarterback Matt Schilz has led the most potent offense in France in 2016 racking up 251 points averaging 37 points a game to lead the French league.
Additionally, running back Isaac Amoako has been steady in the backfield for St. Ouen all season. In the semifinal against the Flash he had 133 yards rushing and a touchdown.
